Defense Rifle used for Self Defense

A couple of thugs tried to rob the wrong coffee shop when they picked one owned by an armed citizen prepared to defend herself with a self defense rifle:

Bouaphan Chanthunom, 51, opened fire with an assault rifle, instantly killing Joseph Murphy McRae, 36, of Mount Gilead.

You know, the way this whole thing is phrased really irritates me. You correctly refer to her firearm as a self defense rifle. The press calls it an "assault" rifle. But oddly, it was her attacker that was charged with assault. No charges were filed against the woman defending herself, so how did the rifle remain an "assault" weapon?

Very true. Additionally they no doubt are incorrectly labeling it an assault rifle since the actual definition of assault rifle is a select fire rifle that has the "full auto" mode of fire as in safe/semi/auto selector switch. They probably meant to use Bill Clinton's so-called "assault weapon" definition that is no longer law so that fake definition is also dead regardless. It's simply a normal rifle that happens to be very fun to shoot that the media loves to call an "assault weapon" to make it sound like something it isn't.

When I worked at a local gun store and somebody would say they were looking for an "assault rifle" I'd always hand them the little hot pink Davy Crickett .22 single shot bolt action. They'd look at me funny, and I'd point out that "assault" is a verb, not an adjective...

ROFL - Love it! Had not yet made the verb not an adjective connection either. That is perfect.
