To My Friends in California: Get the Monkeys off your Back
I have met many people who have moved to Arizona or other Free States in our Nation to escape the monkeys that have been running the California Legislature. Nevada has launched an add campaign inviting California small businesses to move there to get the monkeys off their back and to escape State income taxes that are among the highest in the Nation. I'd only add that by moving to any of the remaining Free States Californians would also escape a plethora of Nanny State personal freedom infringements as well, the right to keep and BEAR arms being high on the list.
In California you can keep some arms if they're the right color, have only approved features, and are on a State Approved Arms List, but are you allowed to BEAR them? Only if you carry your gun openly while leaving it unloaded, or you carry openly while in a rural area. Unless you are among the California residents lucky enough to have received permission from the local Sheriff in the form of a permit to carry concealed which only happens if you can prove to him or her that your life is worth protecting:
If the CCW license is desired for . . . the protection of large sums of money or valuable property, you are required to explain and provide good cause for issuance of the license . . .Do the Monkeys running the California Legislature not know that the guns the criminals carry are always loaded, and that criminals do victimize law abiding citizens within populated areas? Why have the criminals been given the upper hand by California legislators?
In Free States, all citizens are deemed worthy to bear openly carried loaded arms for self defense, so long as you are not a prohibited possessor. There is no discrimination here based on how much money you carry to the bank or how populated the area is that you happen to be standing in.
Update 1: Whether or not you are in a position to move or are in a position to need or want to stay in California, be sure to support the efforts of gun rights organizations like the SAF, Calguns and the NRA to train or preferably replace the monkeys who treat your rights like discarded banana peels.

Open Carry Alive & Well in Arizona
Yes, in Arizona we still enjoy the right to keep & BEAR arms without a piece of paper from the Government granting us permission, so long as you do so openly. This apparently freaks out some of those who are scared of guns. I guess it is a bit jarring when they finally come to the realization that people besides the Criminals & Police officers are carrying weapons. Perhaps it is time that they also realize it is far easier to carry a gun for your protection than it is to carry a Police Officer. If you dial 911, it will likely take minutes for the Police to arrive, but your trusty sidearm will always be at your side immediately. Besides that, I have a number of friends who are Police Officers, and I can't think of a single one of them that would consent to being carried around.

What GOA had to say.
What the press had to say: KTAR, ABC 15.
For once I can agree with something Robert Gibbs said:
Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said people are entitled to carry weapons outside such events if local laws allow it. “There are laws that govern firearms that are done state or locally,” he said. “Those laws don’t change when the president comes to your state or locality.”Sebastian has the scoop on what some of the bloggers are saying. Alan Gura & the Second Amendment Foundation are confronting the Washington DC ban on bearing arms (what part of keep & BEAR arms do DC Politicians not understand?). Hopefully it will be at least as successful as the Heller case.

AZ AG Terry Goddard Opposes Constitutional Carry!
Standing in Opposition to Arizona Constitutional Carry SB 1270 which will be heard today by the Senate Judiciary Committee, Arizona AG Terry Goddard and a group of Police Chiefs have announced that they don't support the Arizona Constitution. At least not Article 2, Section 26 of the Arizona Constitution which says “The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself or the state shall not be impaired . . ."
What part of impaired does Goddard fail to understand? Isn't Terry Goddard supposed to support the law? If so, perhaps he should READ IT.
I can understand the Police Chiefs who are political appointees who answer only to the anti-gun Mayors or University Presidents who appointed them, but Terry Goddard was elected by we the citizens to enforce our Constitution. Give AG Terry Goddard a call & ask him to support the human right of Self Defense and our Arizona State Constitution which PROTECTS IT!
Be sure to submit your testimony in favor of SB1270 via the Arizona Request to Speak system: http://alistrack.azleg.state.az.us/rts/login.asp
You can watch today's hearing on Constitutional Carry SB 1270 live today in Senate Hearing Room 1 (scheduled to take place this afternoon, Friday June 19th, whenever the Senate Committee of the Whole is Adjourned), or you can watch it sometime next week after the video becomes available in the video archive.
Update 1: I've been watching the live video feed of the Senate Hearing & SB 1270 Constitutional Carry along with a couple of proposed amendments were passed out of committee with a do pass recommendation in a 4 to 3 vote. Next steps for the bill will be Senate COW floor debate & the Senate 3rd Read floor vote.

AZ: Constitutional Carry SB 1270
SB 1270 is an Arizona constitutional carry bill that has been introduced in the Senate. It essentially would remove the current requirement to have a CCW permit when carrying a concealed weapon unless you're a prohibited possessor or are in the process of committing a serious criminal offense as defined in 13-706 or a violent crime as defined in 13-901.03. It would also remove the current problem of people being cited for concealed carry without a permit when open carrying in their car. Open Carry would of course remain as is, no requirement for any permit either.
It would still allow people to get a CCW permit if they choose to in order to gain certain additional benefits such as reciprocity granted by other States that don't yet have constitutional carry laws, or to carry in current restricted areas under specific conditions, such as to carry onto school grounds while dropping off or picking up a child. It would of course be optimal to remove all existing restrictions on bearing arms anyplace we are legally allowed to be, but that would likely be too large of a first step in our legislature as it would face strong opposition.
Alaska & Vermont already respect constitutional carry. Hopefully more & more states will continue with this trend of removing infringements on our right to keep & bear arms.
An easy way to contact your representatives to let them know you support this bill is through this NRA sponsored gateway.
Below is an update from AZCDL about the bill:
SB 1270, an AzCDL-requested bill that removes the penalty for law-abiding citizens carrying concealed weapons without a permit, was filed late afternoon on Tuesday, January 27, 2009. You can read the text of SB 1270 at http://tinyurl.com/dko6oy .Update 1: Unfortunately this bill didn't make it through the full legislative process this year before the session was over due to the lack of time after the budget was finally passed, although several other important bills did manage to make it. This bill will be a top priority in 2010.
Dave Kopp and John Wentling, AzCDL's president and vice-president, and full-time volunteer lobbyists, worked hard lobbying for SB 1270 and encouraging legislators to sign on as co-sponsors. The following twenty-two (22) legislators are the co-sponsors of SB 1270:
Senator Sylvia Allen, District 5, sallen@azleg.gov, (602) 926-5219
Senator Ron Gould, District 3, rgould@azleg.gov, (602) 926-4138

If your Senator or Representative is one of the co-sponsors, please take the time to send them an email or call them and thank them for co-sponsoring SB 1270. It's critical that they know you are aware of, and appreciate, their support of SB 1270. You can find your legislators at: http://www.azleg.gov/alisStaticPages/HowToContactMember.asp .
If your Senator or Representative is NOT a co-sponsor, please call them or send them an email asking them why they did not co-sponsor SB 1270. Politely mention that you expect them to support SB 1270 in the future. You can find your legislators at: http://www.azleg.gov/alisStaticPages/HowToContactMember.asp .

For Those Who Say Only The Police Should Have Arms
For all the folks who say nobody but the Police should have guns. I support the Police because they provide a great service & they risk their necks for all of us on a daily basis. Just don't expect me to give up my personal responsibility to protect my own family. Anyone who says we should all give up our own responsibility for self protection & expect the Police to make up for it is out of their mind. The Police can't be everywhere all the time. I carry my own gun everywhere I go because it's easier than carrying a Police Officer (that and it's simply my own responsibility). When seconds count, the Police are likely minutes away.
If someone breaks into my home or attacks my family while we're out & about in a Mall, Museum, Hotel, or most anyplace else other than while in a Gun Free Zone, they can expect to eat some of the lead from my gun. I won't go down without a fight when it comes to protecting my family, and I always have at least 31 rounds of ammo with me in addition to the extra 60 rounds in spare magazines in my car just in case I need more. It's always better to have more than you need than to run out while in a time sensitive critical situation. I just hope nobody ever assaults me while I'm in a Gun Free Zone - in that case all I'll have to fight back with is a mop from the janitorial closet (that and the pocket knife in my pocket).
Update 1: Related article written by John R Lott Jr:
Banning guns is in the news. India practically bans guns, but that didn’t stop the horrific Muslim terrorist attacks this last week.
A football player concerned for his safety violates New York City’s tough gun control regulations by carrying a concealed handgun, and people call for everything from banning NFL players from carrying guns to demanding that the athlete serve many years in jail . . .

House Bill Would Repeal DC Gun Ban
The Second Amendment Enforcement Act HR 1331 - contact your representative & ask that they sign the HR 1331 discharge petition to bring the Second Amendment Enforcement Act to the floor for a vote.
HR 1331 would force the vote on a modified version of HR 1399 which if passed would repeal the DC semiautomatic handgun ban & remove all requirements for registration & keeping guns disassembled. It is in the process of gathering required signatures to over-ride the House Democrat Majority that had blocked HR 1399 in a move to prevent a vote. HR 1331 is co-sponsored by Reps. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) and Mark Souder (R-Ind.)
. . . Souder is seeking to bring the bill to the floor through a "discharge petition," which requires the signatures of 218 House members. The move allows the measure to bypass House committees, and forces the Democratic majority to allow the full chamber to vote on it.
Since filing the petition last week, Souder has collected 109 signatures. He is confident of picking up sufficient support since 247 legislators had previously co-sponsored the gun bill, including 56 Democrats . . .
More here.
Update 1: House Democrat Leadership decided to allow the vote on bill HR 6691.

The 10 Lb handgun?
Wow, I wonder where this fellow found his 10 Lb handgun?
As for where to carry your handgun, it's always best to carry on your person. Not buried somewhere in your hiking backpack.Dawson Wheeler, owner of Rock/Creek Outfitters in Chattanooga, has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and said he understands hikers’ fears, because there were many moments during his trip when he wished he had a gun.
But carrying a loaded gun on a trail is not practical, he said.
Handguns weighing five to 10 pounds are comparatively heavy, and if they are buried in a backpack out of sight it could take a hiker too long to reach one in an emergency, he said.
Dawson Wheeler also provided safety tips for ways to stay safe in the woods without carrying a weapon. I've corrected them below:
Corrected Safety tips:
TIPS ON HIKING SAFETY (corrected)
1. Never hike alone: hike with a slow runner - that way if you're attacked you don't have to outrun your assailant, just your hiking buddy.
2. Don’t leave your street sense (or your gun) at home.
3. Be careful in parking lots, roads, & on lonely hiking trails in the middle of nowhere.
4. Hike during the day, sleep at night (with your gun).
5. Pick trails with a lot of traffic.
6. Do homework before you go. Ask a park ranger or an outdoors store employee about your hiking or camping destinations, then be sure to carry your gun regardless. If you knew you were hiking into trouble, you obviously would not hike there. Better to be safe than sorry.

Dave Workman article in favor of removing weapon ban in National Parks
Dave Workman has written a very good article in favor of removing the current weapon ban in National Parks.
". . . In the years between 2002 and 2007, there were 63 homicides in national parks, 240 rapes or attempted rapes, 309 robberies, 37 kidnappings and 1,277 aggravated assaults, according to National Park Service statistics.Apparently opponents of removing the ban against loaded operable weapons don't feel there is enough probability of attack to warrant allowing people to have the choice to arm themselves for self defense while in National Parks because the risk of attack by man or beast while in National Forests is lower than while visiting the top 50 most dangerous cities of our Nation. I bet that at least some of the nearly 2000 National Park victims mentioned above might have wished they had some means of self defense with them when they were attacked by criminals who ignored the gun ban. It probably mattered to most of them, and it certainly matters to me.
You see, our Bill of Rights were written to protect the preexisting rights (natural or God given, depending on your religious view) of the few against the tyranny of the many. Even if 51% of the population and our congress were to decide that nobody should be allowed to have free speech, to worship as they please, or to BEAR arms in self defense whether that be in their homes, in schools, or in National Parks, the preexisting rights of the few would be protected against the tyranny of the many. The 2nd Amendment may be an inconvenient truth to those against guns, but the protection does exist, so they might as well get used to it.

Come support SB 1214 on Monday Feb 18th
I have received this update & request for support of SB 1214 (Bill to remove the current ban on CCW permitee's from carrying concealed on School Campuses) from Arizona State Senator Karen Johnson:
Hello all you supporters of SB1214 –If you can't come to the meeting, you can watch the hearing live via the Internet. Select Senate Hearing Room 1. Also be sure to sign up for the Arizona RTS (Request to Speak) system at either the Arizona Senate or House building via any of multiple kiosks. You'll be able to set a username & password that you can then use to enter your for or against vote as well as to submit a letter to be read during the hearing via the following Arizona RTS website: http://alistrack.azleg.gov/rts/login.asp
The bill has been scheduled for a committee hearing on Monday, February 18, at 1:30 p.m., in Senate Hearing Room 1.
I know it’s hard to get off work, but if any of you can come to the hearing, please do – the more the better. A good showing of supporters will impress the committee members.
If you can’t come, you will be able to watch the hearing live on the internet. I’ll send out a link in a few days so you’ll know how to do that if you’re not familiar.
In the next few days, there is a lot that people can do to lend support to this bill:
1. Email your own legislators and encourage their support for the bill.
2. If you haven’t already and can get up to the capitol, get signed up on the kiosk in either the House or the Senate. You only have to sign up once. Then you can send a message from home when a bill is heard and express your support or opposition to the bill. That will be read at the committee hearing, and your name and expression of support will become a part of the permanent record for that bill. If you can slip away between now and Monday and sign up on the kiosk, then even if you can’t come to the hearing on Monday, you’ll be able to list yourself as a supporter. If I’m confusing you, Dave Kopp and John Wentling can help explain.
I’ll be in touch in the next few days with some additional information. Thanks so much for your support for this bill. I really appreciate it and look forward to seeing some (many?) of you on Monday.
Best regards,
Senator Karen S. Johnson
Update 1: The turnout in support for this bill was excellent. I estimate that proponents outnumbered opponents at about 2 to 1. I also noticed that opponents listed made up "what if" scenarios but when asked could not cite a single example to back it up. Proponents listed actual examples & statistics to back up their arguments. Very well done.
Soon you should be able to watch a video of the proceedings in the archive. Here is a local Fox news report on it. Interesting that they included video of full auto assault rifles although it would be rather difficult to conceal carry such a weapon. Here is a local CBS 5 news report on it.
Update 2: The archive of the video is now available here. The video is titled "02/18/2008 - Senate Judiciary"
The first 10 minutes are for another bill. The SB 1214 hearing begins at roughly the 10 min:24 sec mark. Initially you'll hear an overview of what the bill does as well as thoughts from AZ Senator Karen Johnson. The testimonials from those against the bill begin @ about the 0hr:14min:30sec mark. They were not asked to avoid repetition so you'll find that each testimonial basically covers the same points over & over. You can sum up their talking points with the following:
1) more guns = more bad, more accidents, more death
2) Police will be too confused if there is more than one person with a gun at the scene (a bad guy or gal & one or more good guys or gals)
3) citizens with guns will use their guns to kill in situations that without guns would have ended in nothing more than a heated argument, yelling, or perhaps a severe physical beating.
When asked, none of them were able to cite specific events where the above took place. They simply went on about imaginary "what if" scenarios with zero evidence to support their arguments based on nothing more than their own fear of guns.
The testimonies of those in favor of the bill began @ 1hr:05min:12sec. Due to time constraints & the fact that there were so many there to speak in favor of the bill, those in favor were asked to only bring up items that had not yet been discussed by other proponents. Even with that constraint, we managed to speak in favor of the bill for roughly 1 hr & 19 min's until the 2hr:24min:30sec mark which is when they list people who have submitted their stance against the bill online but did not sign up to speak. At 2:27:50 they begin the list of those in favor of the bill that did not speak. All done by 2:29:00 where they move on to SB 1408.

One citizen with a gun can make a big difference
The opposite of a "gun free zone" is a location that does not ban weapons. An attempt at yet another mass shooting this past Sunday at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado was stopped short by Jeanne Assam, a CCW licensed armed member of the congregation that was legally carrying a concealed weapon when she pulled out her gun & shot the deranged maniac who had one thing on his mind - killing as many innocent victims as possible. He was armed with 2 handguns, a rifle, over 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and was working his way towards a large congregation in the church when she brought his shooting rampage to an early end.
He had made one fatal mistake (besides the obvious mistake of going off the deep end with plans to murder as many people as he could) - he forgot to go to a gun free zone. Instead he went to a freedom of choice zone where citizens were free to choose for themselves to be armed or not to be armed. Lucky for the hundreds of potential victims in the building, it was not a gun free zone, and at least three members of the congregation had exercised their choice to be armed.

63 year old lady thrown in jail for bearing a weapon
I bet the citizens of Florida slept easier this past Sunday night knowing that a 63 year old senior citizen was safely behind bars. Mary Ann Richardson, a US Citizen & a resident of Pennsylvania, was thrown in Jail in Florida while she was visiting there as a tourist. What was her crime? Bearing concealed weapons (a small handgun, a pocket knife, and a pair of scissors) without a CCW permit. She is currently out on $2,000 bail while she awaits her trial.
Wait, what about the 2nd Amendment. Does it not include "the right of the people to keep & bear arms shall not be infringed?"
I guess that particular constitutionally protected right doesn't apply to 63 year old senior citizens who bear arms to protect themselves from actual dangerous criminals but neglect to apply for a CCW permit.
To be fair to Florida, it is not the only State that requires a permit to bear a concealed weapon, and at least Florida does recognize CCW permits from other states, in addition to allowing residents from other States to apply for one if they wish. In that sense Florida is far ahead of States like California & Oregon which do not recognize CCW permits from US citizens visiting from any other state. Florida is light years ahead of States like Wisconsin & Illionios that not only don't recognize CCW permits from other states nor the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms, but those States are the only two that don't even issue CCW permits to their very own residents, not even to "well connected" residents like the "May Issue" States often do.
There are only 2 States that recognize the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms in its full glory - Alaska & Vermont - both of which fully recognize the right of individual US Citizens to keep & bear arms without any special State issued government permission in the form of a CCW permit. Now that is true freedom. Truly a good model for all States to follow. The only requirement in Alaska & Vermont is that you may not have a weapon while committing a felony which seems fair enough to me. I mean, it's already illegal to commit a felony, so it does not concern me at all that they also decided that it is illegal to commit a felony while bearing a weapon whether that weapon be a gun or a baseball bat. I would even go one step further and say that it should also be considered a crime to commit a felony while wearing a baseball cap. Felons should get an extra 10 years for that. Anything to keep the felons off the streets & guns in the hands of citizens who wish to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights makes me happy.
Update: There are some excellent comments relating to this story on keepandbeararms.

A Texas gun rights Hero - Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp
One of my favorite gun rights quotes was coined by Dr. Suzanna Hupp - one of the great hero's of gun rights advocacy. Her efforts were a major force in getting the Texas legislature to pass their shall issue CCW law in 1995 that finally "allowed" it's citizens to keep & bear arms - prior to that Texas did not allow either concealed or open carry of handguns in public at all, unless you were part of a government agency. So in essence, Texas had previously quashed the right to bear arms. Currently it is only partially quashed, since you still can't openly carry a handgun in public there with or without a permit, and you can only conceal carry there with permission from the state in the form of a permit. But at least Texas is now a "shall issue" CCW state, so if you apply, take the required training course, pay the expensive fees, pass the required background checks, & meet the stated requirements, they have to issue you a permit.
You can watch Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp discuss the gun rights issue via the below video links:

On to my favorite Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp quote:
How a politician stands on the Second Amendment tells you how he or she views you as an individual… as a trustworthy and productive citizen, or as part of an unruly crowd that needs to be lorded over, controlled, supervised, and taken care of.Gun control is not about guns - it's about control. Are we as law abiding US citizens to be "allowed" to have the right to keep & bear arms as protected by the 2nd Amendment, or are our Second Amendment rights to be infringed so that the government can lord over, control, supervise, and "take care" of us.
I believe we should all fight to keep our constitutional rights, and I will heavily oppose any politician who wishes to "lord over" me as evidenced by a record of voting in favor of adding new gun control laws. The last thing in the world I want is to wake up one morning to find Bill Clinton is the newest 1st Lady in the White House. Hillary Clinton has voted anti gun & anti 2nd Amendment in every single gun related vote that she has ever cast. No matter what, do NOT vote for Hillary Clinton or any of the other anti-gun candidates if you care one iota about our Bill of Rights & our freedoms that it protects.
No matter which candidate in which party you are planning to vote for, make sure to find out where he or she stands on the gun rights issue, and don't just take their word for it. Look at their voting record to confirm what they say. Do they want to leave guns in our own control where it belongs, or do they wish to take the control away from law abiding citizens & hand it over to the government in an effort to lord over, control, supervise, and "take care" of us.
