NV: Mass Shooting Stopped by CCW Permit Holder

In the small town of Winnemucca Nevada a man bent on performing a mass shooting at a bar was stopped by an armed CCW permit holder who happened to be in the right place at the right time. The alleged mass murderer had already killed two victims & had injured two others with gunshot wounds, but after reloading to resume his shooting spree he was shot & killed by an armed CCW permit holder who was also at the bar. The alleged mass murderer & his two dead victims were already dead by the time Police arrived on the scene once again proving that when seconds count, only the immediate responders are already on the scene, while first responders (Police) are only minutes away. This is further proof that gun free zones are a travesty that must be ended.

. . .The officers on scene discovered three adult males who had died from obvious gunshot wounds. Two additional gunshot victims were also located. One of these victims, a 34 year old male, was transported to Humboldt General Hospital via private vehicle. The other victim, a 22 year old female, was transported via Humboldt County Ambulance . . .

. . . The subsequent investigation lead detectives to believe that Villagomez entered the bar and at some point began firing multiple rounds. At least two of these rounds struck and killed the other two decedents, Jose Torres age, 20 and his brother Margarito Torres, age 19 both of Winnemucca. At some point during this shooting spree Villagomez allegedly stopped and according to witnesses reloaded his . . . handgun and began shooting again. It was at this point that the second shooter, the Reno resident, produced a concealed handgun and proceeded to fire upon Villagomez who succumbed to his wounds. The Reno resident was in possession of a valid Concealed Carry Permit issued through the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office . . .

Luckily Nevada does not turn places that happen to serve alcohol for on premises consumption into a so-called "Gun Free Zone" or who knows how high the victim count could have been before Police could have arrived to end it. In Arizona & many other States citizens are not currently allowed to carry a defensive weapon into places that serve alcohol. It is long past time that we get rid of gun free zones, places where only the Police & the criminals are armed.

Update 1: Links to video of this story courtesy of Joe Carpenter:

I (live) in Reno, and this happened in Winnemucca, about an hour or two out of Reno.

KTVN ch2 CBS

KRNV ch4 NBC

KOLO ch8 ABC

Interesting how they all call it a "triple homicide"

Name of the CCW carrier is not being broadcast, prob due to fear of reprisal for putting the shooter down . . .

Update 2: Wayne LaPierre's response in his NRA News what they didn't tell you today blog.

...gee. I wonder why this story wasn't a major headline on NBC?

Yeah, the things that make you go hmmm. Yet more evidence of mainstream media bias - they can't report any stories that won't support their predetermined conclusion that guns are only used for evil purposes.

Good to see we still have a few citizens in this country with the balls to act in a desperate situation.

Unfortunately, our society is training future generations to have an irrational fear of firearms.

Anonymous: you're falling for the media spin. Perhaps you missed the Police Report that they released after interviewing witnesses: "At some point during this shooting spree Villagomez allegedly stopped and according to witnesses reloaded his (insert anti-gun name for regular capacity magazine here) handgun and began shooting again. It was at this point that the second shooter, the Reno resident, produced a concealed handgun and proceeded to fire upon Villagomez who succumbed to his wounds."

If he shot through an entire magazine, reloaded & resumed shooting, it does not sound to me like the typical murder a couple of enemies & run. It is also rather revealing that you think so little of bikers. That is a moronic assumption & stereotype at best, and a complete disregard for the value of life & liberty at worst.

I wonder how many people in this story are illegal aliens??....

Dustin,

New to your blog. In which state do you reside. Me, I'm in Arizona.

Welcome Azygos. I'm an Arizonan too - I live in Peoria.

Great job getting this, Dustin! This is a perfect argument to allow concealed carry in bars. I, personally, open carry everywhere mostly. They allow that in Virginia. :-)

Thank heavens for that Marine with a CCW. My son and his girl friend were there and could have been another victim of this crazy, out of control fool that had no value to human life ... My son called from the bar and said " mom, you're not going to beleive this" THANK YOU for saving my son . Does anyone think that if it was a gun free zone that it would have stopped him for one minute ??? NOT !!! We live in Az that has gunfree zones, can't carry in a place that serves alcohol, being in a bar doesn't mean that you're even drinking or our of control. This young couple were just looking for a place to sit down and rest a few, being at an event taking place that weekend . I have 2 sons that live in a town near by Winnemucca. YES I really wonder why it wasn't on the national news, might look like people that carry aren't all bad and may save lives. !

Thanks for sharing that Cherry! I'm so glad your son & his girlfriend were alright. Thank goodness for that CCW permit holder & that Nevada doesn't make Bars a so-called gun free zone!

Thanks Brad. Yes allowing open carry in Bars or restaurants that serve alcohol would be better than AZ that doesn't allow either open or concealed. Only the Police & the criminals carry in those so-called "gun free zones", but for some reason that doesn't exactly make the disarmed helpless people within them feel safe (except for the hoplophobes who fear guns & think that if they don't see anyone with a gun then nobody has one - maybe someone should let them know that the earth isn't flat just because they can't see the other side)

I live in winnemucca, and the rumor mill is in full swing here, so I've been browsing blogs trying to figure out what really happened, what the public thinks and all that. Id like to share some opinions from somone who lives up the street from players. First off thanks to the CCW holder. Had Villgomez tried to escape on foot he possibly would have tried to come through the area where I live with my wife and 1 year old son. The torres brothers DID come though my neighborhood on foot last year when they shot and very nearly killed ernestos relative. its pretty much common knowledge here that the torres brothers were guilty although the trial has not occurred yet, nor will it ever. which brings me to my second point. ernesto was a pretty good guy who got pulled into this by his family and the fact that the justice system here was not doing its due dillegence taking care of last years shooting, and is in part responsible for this tragedy. Many people I know saw the torres "crew" at numerous times that weekend "looking for trouble". a few people saw them at the carnival in town for the kids, brandish a hand gun and theaten someone. the sentiment going around town ŢHAT DAY was "stay in your home, somethings gonna happen." Do I think ernesto made the right choice, no I don't, do I understand it? yes I do. when you have to stick bed sheets into the wounds of a family member to keep them from dying, and then watch the people who it is commonly known are responsible come very close to getting off scotch free, it might cause many to make the same decision. I think the main reason this is not a big story is because of the limelight it would shed on the good old boy justice system tice that exists here. It takes a year to prosecute an attempted murder of a mexican, and a week to prosecute the murder of a white kid.(im white and the murder I am refering to is that of a friend.) even I can see the injustice in that. while I understand the difference between attempted and succesful, I don't think that that differnce is enough to delay justice.
Its a tragedy all around, as this whole town is pretty well embroiled is this whole mess now, threats are flying back and forth and as I type our high school is in lockdown for the last day of school for fear of reprisal shootings.

as I hope I've been able to convey this issue goes beyond things like gun control, race, liberal verus conservative. this is a complex tragedy that has over the past year has affected almost everyone here, in one way or another. the people involved were more than just crazed gunmen and innocent victims. these were real people with real family. for the rest of us in winnemucca, these familys look to remain a real problem.

Hey there "anonymous" illegal or legal no one in that bar deserved to be shot at...and had he not been killed, he most definitely would've injured and possibly killed several others. My cousin was the 22 year old woman who was shot and later released....she was an innocent patron of the bar. Just a matter of inches, and her young daughter could've been orphaned that night. Thank God she's ok and thank God for the biker that was carrying a gun!! Gun control and gun free zone's won't stop criminals from carrying guns. In my opinion, more law abiding citizens need to get training, get a permit and start packing a gun. Maybe idiots like him will think twice before entering a public place and opening fire!

As for your opinion of bikers....interesting that you can only voice them anonymously from the safety of your computer.

I've never understood laws that forbid carrying arms in places that serve alcohol. If you're not drunk, or not drinking at all, what's the difference?

If anything, a bar is a place where you should be able to carry, as you're more likely to be mugged when you leave.

Well, at least Utah and Idaho have it right. In those states you can carry in a tavern as long as you're not intoxicated.

Very true. We have laws that say you can't drive drunk, why can't we just add that you can't carry drunk. Telling me I loose my right to protect myself just because I happen to be in a restaurant that happens to serve alcohol is worse than it would be to tell people that they can't drive their car to a bar. Note to liberals: such a law would of course be ridiculous, so don't get any ideas!

I totally agree. We need to eliminate gun free zones. They only can hurt, not help. Anyone who wants to bring a gun in doesn't care about a few signs about gun free zone.

I wouldn't be so sure that the permission to carry weapons will be lifted. In the light of the latest events (I'm talking about a massacre in Vegas), authorities can completely prohibit carrying weapons at least, or worse, remove the permission to have weapons. I have a faith in the new security systems that are being tested in China, which will allow finding any person in a couple of minutes.

I wonder how these stories stay out of Media. Anyway the bright side is that Mass shooting was prevented because of one man's bravery.

It is a very delicate issue and the Government should take necessary steps to maintain it otherwise it could go out of hand.
