At least one school district in Texas has taken steps to increase safety by granting teachers permission to conceal carry. Not a full fledged step away from gun free zones, but definitely a step in the right direction for the safety of everyone in the school:

"Why would you put it out there that a group of people can’t defend themselves? Do you think the bulletproof backpacks I saw in the US concealed carry association newsletter make sense? It seems like most talk is about reactions to shootings in schools. Doesn't a bulletproof backpack or notebook offer kids a safety barrier that can help them before they get shot?
