NSSF: Modern Sporting Rifle

The NSSF has launched an educational campaign to demystify the Modern Sporting Rifle, commonly referred to as an AR-15. The lamestream media has colorful names for it designed to cause confusion among those who are not familiar with the details, such as "assault weapon" or "military style weapon." Assault is a verb, not a noun (an action, not a name).

Assault can be performed utilizing a vast array of tools, utilizing any number of common items like a kitchen knife, knuckles, or a baseball bat. Nevertheless I don't hear anyone calling my baseball bat an assault bat, and there is not any reason to call my modern sporting rifle an assault weapon. If I were to add any words to the name of my modern sporting rifle, I'd say Self Defense would be more appropriate than assault. Self Defense Rifle is a fitting name, and it applies well.

I'm glad to see the NSSF running a Modern Sporting Rifle educational campaign, it is definitely helpful.

Debate: Wayne LaPierre Vs. Ed Rendell

Wayne LaPierre & PA Governor Ed Rendell debate Gun Control on CBS "Face the Nation".  Rendell calls for Gun Bans & 1 gun a month laws:

Related Washington Times story.

One question for my friends in PA: Where did you dig this guy up?  Hopefully you can get rid of him during the next election.  Consider replacing him with someone who understands the restraints on government powers built into the Constitution & the Bill of Rights.  For the slower minds like Ed it is even called the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Needs.

As far as his lame comparison to how much trouble you can get into for shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater when no fire exists - we already have the same restraint on guns.  I can carry my gun into a crowded theater but I can't wave it around or threaten people with it, much less fire it.  Unless I'm using my gun to defend human life and all of the legal requirements for the self defense justification are fully met.  Even then I'd be fully liable for any innocent life affected by my actions.

Obama Disrespects the 2nd Amendment, AGAIN

It's official, Holder confirmed that Obama wants to ban the manufacture of perfectly normal magazine fed mid powered semi automatic rifles that happen to have an adjustable length stock (great for sharing a single rifle among multiple family members) and a barrel shroud (which protects the rifle holder from burning themselves on the hot rifle barrel), a pistol grip (great for hanging on to your rifle), or a bayonet lug. So much for Obama's lame promise to "respect the 2nd Amendment," not that I ever believed him for a second.

What do Obama & Holder have against barrel shrouds? Does Obama own stock in an Aloe Vera burn cream company or something? What is so wrong with having an adjustable stock? Does he prefer me to have one rifle for every member of the family, each sized specifically for arm length? What exactly is wrong with a bayonet lug? Has there been a surge in drive by bayonet stabbings that I'm unaware of?

Talk about lame. More from Uncle.

Proposed Gun Ban List

Alan Korwin has the details of a proposed gun ban that Obama would gladly sign according to the Obama website:

. . . Obama & Biden . . . also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent . . .
One of many evil aspects in the anti-freedom bill is the provision to give the Attorney General carte blanche to add any semi-automatic rifle to the ban list at will:
Under the proposal, the U.S. Attorney General can add any “semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General.” Note that Obama’s pick for this office (Eric Holder, confirmation hearing set for Jan. 15) wrote a brief in the Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home.
Yet another reason to oppose the Holder nomination, as if we needed another. When you contact your Senators to oppose Holder, it would probably be a good idea to also mention that you oppose any effort to introduce a new AWB, just to keep it fresh in their minds.

Update 1: More from World Net Daily.

Stealthbeast on AWB

Stealthbeast posted a video commentary on the so-called AWB that Obama wants to reintroduce. (Just as a heads up - Stealthbeast spends the first 3 minutes mocking the anti freedom folks by regurgitating their lame arguments):

Gun Sales Brisk Ahead of Election

All American Blogger has an article about gun owners (like myself) who are worried about what types of gun bans an Obama/Biden Presidency could push through a Democrat controlled congress. As a result of that worry we are causing a surge in gun sales. I've already purchased a couple of AR-15 lowers myself just in case the now expired Clinton ban on the manufacture of certain types of semi automatic scary looking black guns (what a bunch of racists, what exactly is wrong with a black gun? Why exactly would Obama & Biden want to ban the manufacture of black guns?).

Black Rifles are fun to shoot, and they'll be worth a fortune if Obama wins the election and then manages to again ban the manufacture of them which would cause government induced artificial scarcity which would certainly increase their market prices immensely. That doesn't even include the handgun ban nor the all semi automatic gun ban that an Obama/Biden regime would be in favor of.

Just look at fully automatic weapons (firearms that continuously fire with a single pull of the trigger until you either let go or run out of ammo) - the existing government ban on the manufacture of those rifles for anything other than government use has resulted in the existing base of licensed class III fully automatic weapons costing thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars depending on the current scarcity & condition of the specific model involved. Why exactly did we all allow our government to cause inflation through government induced scarcity which resulted in only the rich being able to afford legal full auto weapons?

Note: I specified "licensed" full auto weapons because this of course does not include the illegal full auto weapons available on the black market that the criminals have access to which are much cheaper, if you're willing to break existing laws & risk incarceration in a Federal Prison - anyone who assumes illegal full auto weapons don't exist on the black market probably also thinks the great prohibition got rid of all alcohol, and also likely has in the past purchased ocean front property in Arizona.

Vote for anyone who can beat Obama, and just to hedge your bet, go buy all the guns you may ever want that you can currently afford. I'm not predicting the end of the world scenario that a Socialist Obama/Biden regime would mean for our country, but just in case he does manage to achieve such a victory despite himself we need to prepare for the worst case scenario. Like I learned as a Boy Scout - always be prepared! Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best!

Arms & The Law has a link to the chart.

Update 1: Obama attempts to make fun of Governor Palin by calling her a "Mother, governor, moose shooter." Too bad he forgot that the majority of gun owners already overwhelmingly approve of hunting whether or not they actually engage in it themselves. Allowing a Moose to live a long & fruitful life in its natural habitat before being transformed into meat on the family dinner table certainly is at least as humane as eating a hamburger for dinner. H/T to Sebastian.

Gary Reed: Saturday Night Assault Specials

Check out this article by Gary Reed on Saturday Night Assault Specials:

. . . If, as history reports, assault weapons were developed for assault troops to assault enemies with, what are self-defense weapons?

Why do we never read stories of homeowners driving off thugs with a "self-defense weapon"? If an "assault weapon" is used for self-defense, doesn't that make it a "self-defense weapon"?

Where is the news article of the carjacking victim beating off his assailant with a self-defense nine iron?

Why haven't we heard newscasts of a would-be rape victim defending herself with a self-defense spike heel? . . .

Wouldn't a brick used to attack a person be an assault brick?

Shouldn't hate speech be called assault words?

Shouldn't a hand signal flashed during a road-rage incident be called an assault finger? . . .

The Urban Patrol Rifle

The Peoria AZ PD purchased 12 Urban Patrol Rifles in 2006 & explained for us why they are a useful tool:

In 2006 the Peoria Police Department added 12 additional Urban Patrol Rifles. These rifles allow officers to operate at extended distances, defeat body armor that suspects wear, and rapidly stop violent subjects that are threatening the lives of others. The Peoria Police Department also conducted two Urban Patrol Rifle certification classes for its officers to support the utilization of these vital tools.
I couldn't agree more. Some of the same exact reasons that I own a mid-powered Self Defense Rifle myself. It is interesting to note that in this context Self Defense Rifles are given the respectable name of Urban Patrol Rifle. It makes you wonder why in the hands of someone like myself who is not a police officer the gun grabbers like to call the same exact mid powered semi automatic rifle with an evil pistol grip an assault weapon. This is how I would change the wording in the Peoria PD annual report to apply the same exact listed reasons for owning a Self Defense Rifle to myself:
I purchased a mid powered Self Defense Rifle. This rifle allows me to more effectively operate at extended distances from criminal threats, defeat body armor that one or more criminals who broke into my home might be wearing, and rapidly stop violent subjects that are threatening the lives of my family . . .

Defense Rifle used for Self Defense

A couple of thugs tried to rob the wrong coffee shop when they picked one owned by an armed citizen prepared to defend herself with a self defense rifle:

Bouaphan Chanthunom, 51, opened fire with an assault rifle, instantly killing Joseph Murphy McRae, 36, of Mount Gilead.

Nutter & others calling for more gun bans

Nutter & his friends are up to their old tricks again, calling for yet more gun bans (Sebastian has the details). As if the slain officer would have been less dead if he had been killed with a handgun or a .306 hunting rifle instead? Mayor Nutter, criminals don't obey laws. In fact, criminals are already banned from touching a gun, much less possessing one, so in effect the existing ban on criminals owning guns should already be enough, but like all bans they simply don't work.

Why would taking away one type of rifle from law abiding gun owners based on cosmetic features like a pistol grip or a barrel shroud have saved this officer, especially when the rifle used by the criminal was not even banned by the expired ban on sale of so-called assault weapons? It's time to lock up criminals, not guns. The killer had a long wrap sheet & he should not have been let back out on the streets. If anything or anyone besides the criminal who pulled the trigger shares any blame for the death of the fallen officer it is the failure of the justice system to keep bad guys behind bars, not a lack of a gun ban. Ban criminals, not guns.

Chicago - proposing a placebo to reduce murder

Excellent write up by Steve Chapman describing a proposed sugar pill placebo that won't even have a placebo effect on the Chicago murder rate. Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis wants to ban a type of gun (semi-automatic so-called "assault weapons") which have only used for one of the of the 87 known Chicago homicides so far this year as of the end of March. Jody Weis must have forgotten that criminals are not allowed to own any type of gun, so adding yet another gun ban would have absolutely zero impact on criminals. Once again the law abiding citizens would be the only group impacted by such a ban. To reduce crime Chicago should focus on keeping criminals behind bars rather than punishing the law abiding citizens. Punish the criminal, not the gun, and not the law abiding gun owner.

Another good reason to buy a black rifle

There are many excellent reasons to own a semi-auto AR-15 or other black rifle such as a semi-auto version of the AK-47. Most importantly is the fact that they are fun to shoot. Another is that both Hillary & Obama want to place bans on either manufacturing or selling them (reintroduction of so-called assault weapons ban). Additionally they are excellent for home defense.

Last night we were all given one additional reason to go buy a black rifle if you don't already own one. Ability to fend off large numbers of alien invaders, in the unlikely event that they were to invade. If green aliens landed in your back yard would you rather fend them off with your 7 to 10 round .45 handgun with a few spare mags, or your 30 round AR-15 with a few spare mags? 4*7=28 rounds, 4*30=120 rounds.

Would you rather be able to fend off 28 green aliens before your spare mags are empty, or 120? I'm not saying I think little green aliens are coming, but if they were to come, I'd want to have a good defensive weapon in my possession, as there would not be time to go buy one after they break down the back door.

Would Clinton actually go fight the terrorists with his so-called "Assault Weapon"?

Yesterday my boys & I went to a local gun range to do some shooting. Along with shooting our own guns we also used our yearly free rental of an MP5 submachine gun and all took turns shooting it which as always was a lot of fun. On our way home from the gun range we discussed politics as well as the differences between a true fully automatic assault rifle like an M16 used by military forces and the fake definition of a so-called "assault weapon" used in the now expired Clinton gun ban which is a term that continues to be misused by the media.

We also talked about how Bill Clinton had scaled back the military & closed quite a few military bases while he was President. One of my boys was so disgusted that he suggested that because Bill Clinton took away some of our freedoms & cut back our military he should go over to Iraq to fight some terrorists all by himself, and another went on to suggest that the only weapon he should be allowed to use would be a semi-automatic rifle with 2 or more of the defined "evil looking" features like a pistol grip as defined in his own expired assault weapons ban. We got quite a chuckle with the visualization of him being armed with a semi-automatic rifle trying to fight off a small group of terrorists armed with true fully automatic assault rifles. Perhaps if nothing else he would finally realize that there really is a difference between a semi-automatic rifle with a couple of "evil looking" features & a true fully automatic assault rifle.

CNN lies & fakes the story once again!

I really wish I could just believe that CNN is full of incompetent reporters & editors. Unfortunately it is equally as likely that they are just a bunch of liars who wish to mislead their audience in order to support their own liberal dream of re-enacting the Clinton gun ban (commonly called the "assault weapon" ban by the gun grabbers) that already expired without renewal.

This is a repeat of the same lies & propaganda spewed by CBS news last month as reported in blog entries such as Days of our Trailers & Say Uncle, with new lies added in by CNN for extra putrid flavoring. Just one of the misleading statements CNN included:

"We're having more than one officer shot and killed a week. It's just outrageous that officers are being targeted," he said. "It's something I think all Americans should be outraged about."

He lays the blame squarely on lawmakers who allowed the assault weapons ban to expire in 2004.

What in the world does the rate of killings of Police Officers have to do with the expired Clinton gun ban? They make that statement as if they're saying all or even most of those officers were killed with weapons named on the banned list, which is an outright lie. Officers are killed by all kinds of criminals who use all kinds of weapons - handguns, shotguns, knives, cars, baseball bats, explosives, & normal semi-automatic rifles. Full auto assault rifles are not very common on the streets, and even if they were, it would not be caused by the lack of the so-called assault weapon ban which does NOT include a SINGLE ASSAULT RIFLE. Not one. Surprised? It's all part of the deception - the folks in favor of the Clinton gun ban want people to be confused so that they will support it.

In the CNN news story they keep going back & forth between the phrase "assault rifle" & "assault weapon" as if they both mean the same thing. They did at one time, because assault weapons officially only included assault rifles and weapons used by military forces for armed assaults on enemy forces, until the Brady folks & Clinton decided to cause mass confusion by defining normal semi automatic rifles that have 2 or more "evil looking" features such an "evil" pistol grip as being an "assault weapon" even if it was not an assault rifle. One example of the normal semi automatic guns that had been banned by the Clinton gun ban is the popular "Sport Utility" gun - the AR-15. Jack of all trades - works great for target practice, home defense, target matches, etc. Below is yet another example of the lies from CNN - first they said the Police Department is being armed with Assault rifle's:

Miami's police department also is in the process of arming every officer with an assault rifle.
Then later they said:

Palm Beach Sheriff's deputy Carl Martin bought his own AR-15 and passed the required training.
So apparently they want us to think an AR-15 is an assault rifle which is a big fat lie.

There are far more powerful rifles out there than the semi-automatic rifles that had been banned by the Clinton Gun ban. A .30-06 rifle comes to mind as a popular hunting rifle that is far more powerful than either the popular semi-auto AR-15 or the popular semi-auto version of the AK-47. Yet the article continued to blubber on & on about "high powered assault weapons"
"It's not nice we have to arm ourselves like the soldiers in Iraq," said Sgt. Laurie Pfeil, who supervises a sheriff's road patrol in Palm Beach County and is now certified to carry a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle on the job. It's the civilian version of the military's M-16 used by U.S. soldiers in Iraq.
Believe me when I tell you that our soldiers are not using AR-15 semi-automatic rifles - they NEVER have. They use "select fire" full automatic or burst mode assault rifles commonly known as the M-16. It has little to do with an AR-15 other than that they have a few common features such as a pistol grip & an accessory rail where you can attach utilities like a flashlight which works nicely for home defense purposes against criminal invaders.

So enough with the lies & propaganda. Let's call an AR-15 what it really is - a Sport Utility Rifle or SUR for short. It is not an "assault rifle" even if the media wishes us to believe that it is. The Clinton gun ban was not renewed because it was dumb legislation that did not do anything other than ban perfectly normal semi-automatic rifles in a blatant attempt to keep them out of the hands of law abiding citizens. The truth came out, and the legislation died a well deserved long overdue death, which is exactly where it should stay. Let the dead horse lie in its grave - a zombie horse is not a pretty picture, lets not attempt to raise this dead horse from the grave as the Brady folks are demanding.

CNN & CBS news should start out every story with the following advisory: "Warning - you are about to be assaulted by left wing liberal bias, propaganda, and outright lies carefully crafted to confuse & mislead. Viewer discretion is advised. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."

Assault Weapons Ban

I am surprised by how often I run into folks who tell me that they were fine with the "Assault Weapon" ban because "nobody needs an assault weapon"

I then explain to them that the guns defined by the now expired assault weapon ban were nothing more than normal semi-automatic guns that have 2 or more "evil looking" features (such as a pistol grip) that make them no more dangerous than any other semi automatic gun.

Some of the "evil features" included in the definition of the expired gun ban were:

Any semiautomatic rifle with a detachable magazine, and two or more of the following features:

  • A folding or telescoping stock
  • A pistol grip
  • A flash suppressor
  • A grenade launcher
  • A bayonet lug

I also tell them that the gun grabbers will NEVER take their hunting rifle without first calling it a "sniper rifle." That usually gets their attention.

We should not allow the gun grabbers to take any of our guns - we need to stand together. If we don't hang together, we will hang separately.
