Matt Long: I don't carry

In the past Syd has listed the reasons why he carries a gun. Matt Long of Gun Rights News (Part of the Gun Rights Radio podcast network) has now published his reasons for carrying a gun. Both of them have listed very good reasons to be prepared to defend themselves. The choice of whether or not to be prepared to defend yourself or to only rely on 911 is a personal one. In addition to the excellent reasons they have listed for deciding to be prepared for the defense of themselves & their families, I carry my gun because it's easier than carrying a cop. As is often said, when seconds count, the Police are minutes away!

I carry a gun because I'm an American.

I understand why you would carry a gun and i wish all gun owners would carry a gun and have the same reason you do. but there are some people who carry a gun for a different reason. to harm others and i strongly believe that if we put a cap on guns and unfortunately take guns away from people like you there would be a stop to violent crime.

Kaveman: I agree 100% :)

Anonymous: nice thought and it could work in a perfect Utopia but since we don't live in a perfect world what really happens when you criminalize the ownership of guns is that only the criminals have them. You don't have to imagine the results, you can look them up with verifiable statistics. Australia banned guns & violent crime skyrocketed. The UK banned guns & crime skyrocketed.

On the opposite end, Florida passed concealed carry laws & violent crime dropped. Same thing in the other states that passed concealed carry laws.

violent crime would definitely not stop with a ban on guns, but still, a ban of guns would mean less guns out there, and most likely less shooting. One can say that a ban would cause criminals to be the only one's equipped with guns, but then again; wouldn't the amount of potential criminals also be smaller? I mean, in Norway not even the police are allowed to carry guns (unless they have a special permission), and last time I checked our crime rate was quite a lot smaller than the US (obviously a ban of guns is not the only reason).

Carry a gun to defend yourself against whom? People with guns.

Bischoff: So your argument is that it is ok for violent crime to drastically increase after banning guns as long as less of the violent crime is done with guns and more is done with other weapons like knives, broken beer bottles, & baseball bats?

What difference does it make to the victim if he is killed with a knife or a gun? I don't know about you, but as for me, less violent crime is the goal, not less crime done with a particular instrument.

By disarming the law abiding citizens, criminals are emboldened knowing that all of their targets will be easy victims.

anonymous,
So, are you trying to tell me that the world was a wonderful, perfect place where all creatures got along, until some arab stuffed that chinese firework powder down a tube behind a rock?

Dude, you really need to share what you've been ingesting.

Violence is sadly part of the human condition. Humans have been using whatever technology they are able to dream up to put a hurting on each other for as long as ... well as long as we have been around. Yes, we do have archeological proof of this since it extends prior to written history.

Anonymous & Bischoff, taking guns away will NOT eliminate, or even reduce violent crime. It might reduce crime commited with firearms, but that is it.

In that case, how do the weak protect themselves from the strong? Do all women need to start wearing burkas so that they will not be raped?

The old western saying, while trite, has a lot of truth in it: "God created man, Sam Colt made him equal."

What other tool allows a 95lb crippled woman to fend off a 200+lb would be rapist?

No, pepper spray doesn't work reliably, and a taser is good only if he doesn't have any buddies and you can get far enough away in 15 seconds.

OTOH, I don't care how complete of a ban you put on firearms, they are a mature technology and the genie is already out of the bottle. People in the jungles of Africa and the mountainous outback of Afghanistan are building guns with hand tools. Do you really think that people in the US can't build guns with the equipment in the average garage? Admittedly, it would be easier for criminals to just steal guns from the cops who are authorized to be armed.
