IL: Bill Introduced to Require Million Dollar Liability Policies

If you can't ban guns, make them too expensive to own or use. That seems to be the ideology of the gun grabbers these days. In the past we've seen attempts to make ammunition too expensive to buy. Obama has been in favor of increasing Federal Excise taxes on weapons & ammunition by 500%. The latest attempt is to require liability insurance that would be prohibitively expensive to buy, if it could be obtained at all.

Illinois State House Democrat Kenneth Dunkin has introduced HB 0687 which if passed & signed into law would require all Illinois firearms owners to insure their firearms with $1,000,000.00 liability policies against damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of their firearms by anyone, even by someone who has stolen it, if such an act happens before the firearm owner has "properly reported" the theft to the Illinois State Police.

There are so many things wrong with HB 0687 I don't even know where to begin. Just as a beginning, do you really think any insurance provider would be willing to insure a gun against all willful acts? Last I checked even life insurance has exclusions for willful acts such as suicide by policy holder. Fire insurance excludes willful acts by policy holder such as arson. Could you imagine life insurance that didn't exclude suicide? No life insurance company would ever insure against suicide. It's a guaranteed loosing proposition.

Below is the synopsis of HB 0687:

Amends the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. Provides that any person who owns a firearm in this State shall maintain a policy of liability insurance in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Provides that a person shall be deemed the owner of a firearm after the firearm is lost or stolen until such loss or theft is reported to the police department or sheriff of the jurisdiction in which the owner resides. Provides that the Department of State Police shall revoke and seize a Firearm Owner's Identification Card previously issued under this Act if the Department finds that the person to whom such card was issued possesses or acquires a firearm and does not submit evidence to the Department of State Police that he or she has been issued in his or her name a liability insurance policy in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Effective January 1, 2010.
Glenn Beck discussed HB 0687 during an interview of Stephan Halbrook, author of The Founders' Second Amendment: Origins of the Right to Bear Arms.

This one doesn't stand a chance in Hades of passing. If it did, there would be a public uprising like no one has seen before. Illinois is getting ready to explode as it is.....

When I saw this last week, I was like "WTF are these loons thinking????"

Cripes, you can't even get a BB pistol there, especially in Chi-town, as well as Detroit, most all of S.CA, and several other cities (Philly & NYC).

Wonder what ALL these places "have in common" (other than dipshit politicians)?

And to think that ILLINOIS borders the one I currently LIVE in (Indiana) ...

(rolls eyes)

Scary stuff.

Yeah, soon IL will probably put up Police State barricades on all of its borders to "inspect" vehicles that want to enter it. Kind of like California's "Fruit" inspection stations, only they'll be looking for anything that could be used as a weapon. No baseball bats allowed.

Can't have citizens from the free states entering IL without making sure no tools that protect freedom exist within them.

Oh, I'm glad I moved out of there. But living in AZ we have to deal with the commiefornia people moving here. I don't view that as totally bad but they do take their voting habits with them. And then everyone is whining about us becuase their crime rates are so high.

Dustin, I'm researching the idea of mandatory gun insurance. So far, looks like a good idea to me. especially if I or one of my family is shot. I Qualified as Expert at Ft. leonard Wood and in another branch of service again. If a thing can kill, seems like mandatory training and liability coverage seems reasonable. And about your statement as follows: "Last I checked even life insurance has exclusions for willful acts such as suicide by policy holder. Fire insurance excludes willful acts by policy holder such as arson. Could you imagine life insurance that didn't exclude suicide? No life insurance company would ever insure against suicide. It's a guaranteed loosing proposition."

Most states allow companies to exclude suicide for two years, but it's covered after that. So I don't think that argument works.

Auto fund merchants are great since they're going to get you the auto credits you need with the absolute best arrangements from your loan specialists on their rundowns. It would bode well that when you give the indistinguishable individual certainties (yours) to 20 moneylenders, then you definately are significantly more prone to acquire a decent offer than on the off chance that you offered them to only one credit supplier.
