2008 GRPC 1st Day

This evening I attended the the 2008 Gun Rights Policy Conference Reception here in Phoenix. I met Eric of the Handgun Podcast & we walked around introducing ourselves to some of our favorite heros in the Gun Rights Movement. Just a few of the people Eric & I met this evening were Alan Gura, Alan Gottlieb, Alan Korwin, David Kopel, Jon Roland, & gunscribe.

My favorite part of the evening was just sitting around the table with David Kopel, gunscribe, Eric, Jon Roland, and myself talking about anything & everything 2nd Amendment related. Our conversation included how to best gain converts to our side of the gun rights issue & what exactly the term militia originally meant when the Bill of Rights was written. What a treat. It's too bad we didn't record it as it would have made a great podcast episode.

I can't wait for tomorrow, it's going to be a fun packed day!

Detroit Crime Lab Closed: 10% Error Rate in Firearms Cases!

1 in 10 firearms cases were found to have serious errors during an audit of the Detroit Police Crime Lab which led to its closure - there are likely innocent people in the slammer placed there with invalid evidence from that lab. Many people incorrectly assume Police crime labs are infallible but this just goes to show that nobody can screw something up the way a government agency can. Like President Ronald Reagan said, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"
. . . The inspection found that the laboratory’s firearms unit was in compliance with just 42 percent of “essential standards,” which are criteria that fundamentally affect the outcome of work there. Accreditation requires 100 percent compliance. In addition, auditors re-examined 200 randomly selected shooting cases and found serious errors in 19. The laboratory handles about 1,800 shooting cases a year, they said.

“If this 10 percent error rate holds,” the report said, “the negative impact on the judicial system would be substantial, with a strong likelihood of wrongful convictions and a valid concern about numerous appeals.” . . .

Obama Trying to Squash the 1st Amendment

Running scared of the truth about his war against the 2nd Amendment getting out via NRA ads, the Barack Obama campaign tried to squash the 1st Amendment. I guess trying to squash the 2nd Amendment just wasn't enough for Barack Obama.

Sebastian & Bitter have more.

Dustin Hawkins: Barack Fauxbama

Dustin Hawkins (no relation to myself but I do like his 1st name!) wrote an excellent article about Barack Obama titled: Barack Fauxbama:

Last week, Barack Obama challenged a crowd of supporters to approach Republicans and Independents and to “argue with them and get in their face.” And then do what? Lie? He immediately asked his supporters to talk about what a gun-toting, anti-tax nut he is. Let’s take a moment to note the irony of having the biggest liberal in the Senate tell a liberal crowd to argue non-liberal positions on his behalf.

Obama asked that when his supporters get in their friends faces and argue to tell them that he just loves the 2nd Amendment. The NRA, which I hear knows a thing or two about gun rights, gave Obama a grade of F in 1998, 2002, and 2004. Gun Owners of America followed this up with F’s in 2005 and 2007. And though Obama’s mate Joe Biden recently said he would fist-fight Barack if he tried to touch his guns, Biden too is mysteriously wrapped up in F’s from the NRA and GOA, but gets A’s from anti-gun groups the Brady Campaign and Handgun Control, Inc. So yes, get in their faces… and lie . . .
Check it out, definitely worth a read.

PA: Sheriff DeLeo Revoked Her CCW Permit

Lebanon County PA Sheriff Michael DeLeo revoked Meleanie Hain's concealed carry permit because she was open carrying while watching a soccer game. I'm no expert on PA law, but it looks to me like it is perfectly legal to open carry in PA with or without a permit unless you happen to be in the city of brotherly love, which she wasn't. I guess that Sheriff DeLeo just doesn't like soccer moms to be armed for the defense of themselves or their children so he abused his authority in an illegal fashion. I hope she sues & wins enough to buy herself a case of her favorite lipstick & a couple of extra firearms of her own choosing paid for courtesy of the citizens who elected DeLeo. Perhaps in the next election they'll choose more wisely.

You may even want to call or e-mail his office to let him know exactly what you think of his decision before the next election. His office can be reached at 717-228-4410.

You can see a copy of the Sheriff's revocation letter here. Other details here. There is also a fundraiser.

Update 1: More from Fox. H/T to Arms & the Law.

Update 2: Second Amendment Sisters Applaud Meleanie Hain.

Update 3: Oct 14th Judge ruled in her favor & Rescinded the Revocation. H/T to Sebastian.

Update 4: More.

Update 5: Meleanie Hain Files One Million Suit against Sheriff DeLeo.

Update 6: Unfortunate news: Meleanie's husband killed her in a sneak murder/suicide attack that caught her by surprise while she was using her computer. Anti Gun folks are using this attack by her husband as an excuse to say everyone should be denied the freedom to bear arms in their own defense. I say hogwash to that ridiculous conclusion.

Tom Gresham's guntalk.tv

I just realized that I've never done a post about Tom Gresham's guntalk.tv - it's a great resource for both new & long time gun owners. There is a wealth of free instructional videos available on a wide range of topics in addition to instructional videos that are only available if you choose to subscribe. Check it out.

You are probably already aware that Tom Gresham also hosts an excellent weekly Gun Talk Radio show that you can listen to on many good radio stations or via live streaming over the Internet on Sundays in addition to being available as a podcast. If you've never listened to his show you're missing out on a lot of fun. He covers a vast swath of gun related topics from shooting sports to gun rights issues, politics, and politicians.

As an extra bonus, for those of us lucky enough to be attending this year's Gun Rights Policy Conference, Tom Gresham will be speaking there this Sunday!

Another Obama Compatibility Test

Earlier I mentioned the NRA OMatch Obama Compatibility Test which covers critical gun rights issues. This evening I took another Obama Compatibility test that covers 51 of the major political issues. It turned out that he disagrees with me on 49 out of the 51 issues covered. At the end it also lets you know how average Americans answered the same questions based on surveys, & it turned out that he's out of step with the Average American in all but one item. Why? Because he represents the far left fringe of the far left wing, & he represents the type of change that Average Americans do NOT want!

So once again, if you are even remotely thinking about pulling the lever for Obama this November, take the Obama Compatibility Quiz first! Does Obama represent Change? You bet. Does he represent the type of change America wants? No WAY!

Dr Phil on Teachers with Guns

Dr Phil is planning today to discuss the Texas School District that has opted to "allow" a board approved list of CCW permit holding teachers who have received special training on dealing with hostage situations be "allowed" to bear arms while in so-called "Gun Free Zones" in their school district. Expect some anti-gun bias on the part of Dr Phil & the Pro-Obama Texas Federation of Teachers Union rep.

AZ: Phoenix Homeowner Mistakenly Shot by Police

A tragic story indeed from this past Wednesday night. Important details are not yet clear. The reports I've read mention that the Police arrived on the scene after multiple 911 calls and found a woman with 2 children outside the home shouting "He's got a gun!" Inside the home a Phoenix homeowner had been detaining an intruder at gunpoint in a room when the Police went in & ordered everyone out of the home. As the homeowner was walking down the hall carrying his gun a Police Officer mistook him for the intruder they had been called about & shot him multiple times, though the homeowner is expected to survive. The wounded intruder was found afterward in the room the homeowner had come out of. The officer is now on routine administrative leave while an investigation into the incident is underway.

FL: Robber Threatened the Life of the Wrong Baby

When an armed robber in Lake Worth Florida pointed his gun at a 7 Month old baby he quickly learned that you don't threaten the family of an armed man. Unfortunately for the robber, it was his final lesson.
Noel Nagi says he was ready to give the gun-toting would-be robber the cash - about $150. "Just don't do anything crazy. There's a baby."

Around the counter-top corner, Nagi's 7-month-old grandson was perched on his father's knee. His mother, Nagi's daughter, stood nearby.

"I don't give a f—," Nagi recalls the man saying as he pivoted and leveled the gun at the boy.

Then a customer pulled open the A1A Discount Beverage door. In a heartbeat, the gunman was distracted.

The father, Yamen Abdelfattah, handed off the infant to its mother. She rushed him to the closed office in two steps. The gunman's attention and weapon then returned to Nagi, the store's owner. And the babe's father, a gun-carrying veteran of the check-cashing business, pulled his weapon, rounded the corner and fired.

"Five, six times, I don't know. I've never shot someone," 29-year-old Abdelfattah said, retelling the story Monday morning from the very chair he and his son were in last night at the shop in suburban Lake Worth . . .

DC Second Amendment Enforcement Act Passes in House

The House today passed the Second Amendment Enforcement Act (H.R. 6842), and it now moves to the Senate. Call your Senator & ask that it be placed on the Senate schedule. Below is a related NRA-ILA press release:
Fairfax, VA - The U.S. House of Representatives voted today to approve the National Rifle Association (NRA)-backed “Second Amendment Enforcement Act” in an overwhelming bi-partisan vote of 266-152. The Act, passed as an amendment to H.R. 6842, will overturn the District of Columbia’s gun control restrictions that defy the recent Supreme Court ruling by continuing to limit D.C. residents’ right to self-defense. This bill is necessary to enforce the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in District of Columbia v. Heller.

Following passage, Chris W. Cox, NRA’s chief lobbyist remarked, “From the moment the Supreme Court overturned this failed gun ban, elitist politicians have sought to undermine the Court’s decision with bogus emergency regulations that all but stop residents from exercising their Second Amendment rights. NRA wants to make sure D.C. residents are able to protect themselves and their families.”

On June 26, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled “the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense.”

A bi-partisan group of Congressmen introduced legislation this summer to force the D.C. Council into compliance with the Supreme Court after the council enacted ‘emergency’ gun-control restrictions on its residents after D.C.’s gun ban and self-defense ban were overturned.

The Second Amendment Enforcement Act will:
  • Repeal the District’s ban on semi-automatic handguns. Semi-automatic pistols have been the most commonly purchased firearms in the United States over the last 20 years, and therefore a ban on those firearms is unconstitutional as decided by Heller;
  • Restore the right of self-defense by repealing the requirement that firearms be disassembled or secured with a trigger lock in the home;
  • Reform the current D.C. registration system that requires multiple visits to police headquarters; ballistics testing; passing a written test on D.C. gun laws; fingerprinting; and limiting registration to one handgun per 90 days. The current system is unduly burdensome and serves as a vehicle for even more onerous restrictions; and
  • Create a limited exemption to the federal ban on interstate handgun sales by allowing D.C. residents to purchase handguns in Virginia and Maryland. Currently there is only one licensed firearm dealer in the District, and the District government is standing in the way of additional dealers opening their doors. A 40-year old federal law prohibits residents from purchasing handguns outside of the District.
I’d like to thank Congressmen Travis Childers, John Dingell, John Tanner, Mike Ross, Mark Souder, Bill Sali and Robin Hayes for their leadership. NRA will continue our work to bring the Second Amendment to D.C. residents, but we call on the Senate now to take up this historic legislation,” concluded Cox. “The American people should know where their elected representatives stand on this critical civil rights legislation before the November elections.”

-nra-

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

Video of US House of Representatives Debate

Last night I watched the US House of Representatives Debate their option to revoke the unconstitutional gun bans in Washington DC via the Childers substitute amendment to HR 6842. The archive video is available here. It was very interesting to watch the debate unfold where many representatives from both sides of the isle joined Representative Travis Childers in defense of the 2nd Amendment protection of the right to keep & bear arms, and his bill that would at least partially bring an end to egregious infringements of it in the District of Columbia. In contrast another group of Democrats argued against it & talked about "Local Government Rights" which of course don't even exist. The government has powers, not rights, and in the case of Washington DC, the local government only has whatever power that congress chooses to delegate to it.

The House is scheduled to vote on it this morning. I'll update this post with a link to that video once it becomes available.

Update 1: The House passed the bill - it goes to the Senate next.

Update 2: Here is a link to the video of the vote.

Economics 101 for Obama & his Supporters

Just the basics. Evan Obama Supporters should be able to understand one or two of the primary highlights:

Vic Sprouse: One Gun a Month & One Protest a Month Compared

Comparison of 1st Amendment & 2nd Amendment relating to unconstitutional bans on buying more than 1 gun a month. Vic Sprouse asks the question: what if a city were to place a similar ban on free speech by only "allowing" one protest per month?
After all, WHO would need to protest MORE than once a month? That seems like a very reasonable number to me….

Giuliani's RNC Speech

In case you missed it, you really should check out Giuliani's RNC speech. He made some great points comparing the Obama/Biden ticket to the McCain/Palin ticket. A few of my favorite quotes discussing Obama:
"Nearly 130 times he couldn't make a decision, he couldn't figure out whether to vote yes, or no, it was too tough. He voted Present. I didn't know about this 'vote present' when I was Mayor of New York City. Sarah Palin didn't have this 'vote present' when she was Mayor or Governor. You don't get present, it doesn't work in an executive job. For President of the United States it's not good enough to be present, you have to make a decision!"

"He's never run a city, he's never run a state, he's never run a business, he's never run a military unit, he's never had to lead people in crisis, he is the least experienced candidate for President of the United States in at least the last 100 years! Not a personal attack, a statement of fact. Barack Obama has never led anything, nothing, nada, nada, nothing . . . tough times require strong leadership, and this is no time for on the job training!"

". . . how many times have we seen Barack Obama do this? Obama promised to take public financing for his campaign, until he broke his promise. Obama was against wire tapping, before he voted for it . . . he favored an undivided Jerusalem, don't get too exited, for one day, until he changed his mind. Well, I'll tell you, if I were Joe Biden I'd want to get that VP thing in writing!"

Giuliani: ‘Obama hasn’t led anything’
Giuliani: ‘Obama hasn’t led anything’

Another Reason NOT to Vote for Obama - France Loves Him

A Poll in France showed that 80% of the French polled want Obama to win the election, while only 8% want McCain to win. Could it be that the French love the ideas he shared during his tour of Europe when he said America should make more sacrifices? Either way, I can't think of a better endorsement for John McCain & Sarah Palin than for France to prefer Obama.

If France likes Obama so much they can have him. In France. Does France allow foreign nationals to run for office? If so that could be a possible career move for Obama after he looses this election. I know we certainly don't need a Politician here who votes "Present" on nearly 130 items that he can't make a decision on, and consistently votes for a bigger more intrusive government on those that he can.

Pop, Soda, or Coke?

Do you drink Pop, Soda, or Coke? Lately I usually grab a Soda although if you ask for a Pop I still know what you mean because I grew up in Idaho & also lived in Washington State for a few years before I moved to Arizona. If you ask for a Coke I only think of a single brand which tells you I have never lived in the Southeast. :)

Gun Sales Brisk Ahead of Election

All American Blogger has an article about gun owners (like myself) who are worried about what types of gun bans an Obama/Biden Presidency could push through a Democrat controlled congress. As a result of that worry we are causing a surge in gun sales. I've already purchased a couple of AR-15 lowers myself just in case the now expired Clinton ban on the manufacture of certain types of semi automatic scary looking black guns (what a bunch of racists, what exactly is wrong with a black gun? Why exactly would Obama & Biden want to ban the manufacture of black guns?).

Black Rifles are fun to shoot, and they'll be worth a fortune if Obama wins the election and then manages to again ban the manufacture of them which would cause government induced artificial scarcity which would certainly increase their market prices immensely. That doesn't even include the handgun ban nor the all semi automatic gun ban that an Obama/Biden regime would be in favor of.

Just look at fully automatic weapons (firearms that continuously fire with a single pull of the trigger until you either let go or run out of ammo) - the existing government ban on the manufacture of those rifles for anything other than government use has resulted in the existing base of licensed class III fully automatic weapons costing thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars depending on the current scarcity & condition of the specific model involved. Why exactly did we all allow our government to cause inflation through government induced scarcity which resulted in only the rich being able to afford legal full auto weapons?

Note: I specified "licensed" full auto weapons because this of course does not include the illegal full auto weapons available on the black market that the criminals have access to which are much cheaper, if you're willing to break existing laws & risk incarceration in a Federal Prison - anyone who assumes illegal full auto weapons don't exist on the black market probably also thinks the great prohibition got rid of all alcohol, and also likely has in the past purchased ocean front property in Arizona.

Vote for anyone who can beat Obama, and just to hedge your bet, go buy all the guns you may ever want that you can currently afford. I'm not predicting the end of the world scenario that a Socialist Obama/Biden regime would mean for our country, but just in case he does manage to achieve such a victory despite himself we need to prepare for the worst case scenario. Like I learned as a Boy Scout - always be prepared! Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best!

Arms & The Law has a link to the chart.

Update 1: Obama attempts to make fun of Governor Palin by calling her a "Mother, governor, moose shooter." Too bad he forgot that the majority of gun owners already overwhelmingly approve of hunting whether or not they actually engage in it themselves. Allowing a Moose to live a long & fruitful life in its natural habitat before being transformed into meat on the family dinner table certainly is at least as humane as eating a hamburger for dinner. H/T to Sebastian.

My One Year Blogiversary

I just realized that yesterday was my 1 year blogiversary. I posted my very first post on Sep 5th 2007 titled "Guns are Not Evil." I think I'll have a cupcake to celebrate. :)

The Internet Firearms Movie Database IFMDB.ORG

In his 8/29 episode of The Shot Show, Doc Wesson discusses the Internet Firearms Movie Database at ifmdb.org. It is a fun database that allows you to see what movies a particular type of firearm is in, or see what firearms are in a particular movie & describes who used them as well as how they were used. Very cool. The Shot Show is just one of many great gun rights related podcasts I subscribe to that is a part of the Gun Rights Radio Network at gunrightsradio.com.

In his 7/11 episode number 12 he discusses the "Gun Nation" episode of 30 days which is worth checking out. It follows a vehement anti gun woman who starts out spouting all the standard Brady talking points while she spends 30 days living with a family in the gun rights culture. It is interesting to watch her viewpoint evolve as she is immersed in something that was completely foreign to her.

Update 1: Doc Wesson has renamed his podcast to Gun Nation & moved his website. You can now find him at: gunnation.us.tf

GunBaNObama.com

The NRA has created an easy to remember domain site you can share with your friends: GunBaNObama.com

Details here.

Opposing Views: Join The Debate

Opposing Views asks the question "Does owning a gun make you safer." They have verified representatives of various organizations including the NRA, CCRKBA, Second Amendment Sisters, and GOA, as well as from the organizations of our anti-freedom adversaries who are all able to make official statements on behalf of their organization on the topic. Best of all, everyone is allowed to weigh in by making comments agreeing with or opposing those statements. Quite unlike the Brady blog, at Opposing Views you are actually able to refute the false claims made by the other side. They also have a Poll on the topic, currently showing 65% to 35% of respondents in favor of the makes you safer side of the argument. Go check it out, and weigh in for yourself.

Uncle mentioned that they changed the image on the topic page from a gun pointed at you to a gun aimed in a safe direction at the request of the NRA which was a very good move.

OUCH! $125 Gun Transfer fees in DC!

Sebastian has the details. I'm sure law abiding DC residents will be glad that they will finally be able to buy a gun but $125 is a high price to pay for doing the ATF regulated background check & paperwork for a gun dealer transfer. I guess a $125 gun transfer fee is the price you pay when there is only one gun dealer in town. Hopefully this will inspire a little friendly market competition.

Watch Video of Tonight's Sarah Palin Speech at the RNC

I watched all the RNC speeches today & I have to say that although they were all very good, Sarah Palin really knocked it out of the park! She really delivered tonight. My entire family sat glued to the TV watching her speak. We cheered, we laughed, we cried, and best of all, we felt her patriotism & depth of character shine through the entire time. Below are just a few of my favorite Sarah Palin quotes from her speech:
". . . we grow good people in our small towns . . . I grew up with those people, they're the ones who do some of the hardest work in America . . .they love their country in good times & bad, and they're always proud of America!"

"I was just your average Hockey Mom & signed up for the PTA, I love those Hockey Moms! You know they say the difference between a Hockey Mom & a Pit Bull? Lipstick."

"I guess a small town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities!"

"We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton & another way in San Francisco!"

"I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment, and I've learned quickly these last few days that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone, but here's a little newsflash for those reporters & commentators, I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion, I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this great Country!"

". . . there is much to like & admire about our opponent, but listening to him speak it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs, but not a single major law or even a reform, not even in the State Senate! This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting & never use the word Victory except when he is talking about his own campaign!"

". . . in politics there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers, and then there are those like John McCain who use their careers to promote change."

". . . there is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you in places where winning means survival, and defeat means death, and that man is John McCain."

It is also available in 5 parts via youtube.

John Snyder Compares the McCain/Palin Ticket to the Obama/Biden Ticket

John Snyder issued a press release comparing the McCain/Palin ticket to the Obama/Biden ticket titled "Palin Pick Protects Pistol Power, says Gun Law Expert, and Overshadows Obama Oscillation on Second Amendment Issues:"
Arlington, VA September 1 2008

Palin Pick Protects Pistol Power, says Gun Law Expert, and Overshadows Obama Oscillation on Second Amendment Issues

When GOP presidential nominee John McCain last Friday picked Alaska’s sharp shooting Gov. Sarah Palin for his vice-presidential running mate, the selection underscored the significance of Americans’ gun rights in the forthcoming national elections and began to galvanize the Second Amendment movement into support for the McCain candidacy, right to self-defense advocate John M. Snyder stated here today.

The McCain-Palin ticket, Snyder added, contrasts sharply with gun-grabbing records of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Hussein Obama and vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden.

McCain signed the congressional amicus brief supporting Dick Heller’s challenge to the District of Columbia handgun ban as a violation of the individual Second Amendment civil right to keep and bear arms. Under Palin’s gubernatorial leadership, Alaska joined a multi-state amicus brief supporting Heller. Both Senators Obama and Biden refused to sign the congressional brief. The Supreme Court agreed with McCain and Palin and threw out the D.C. law in its landmark District of Columbia v. Heller decision on June 26.

Snyder said, While McCain notes that, ‘for more than two decades I’ve opposed efforts to ban guns,’ Obama’s been a gun banner from the get go. He has an extensive anti-gun owner public record despite his occasional euphemistic references to the Second Amendment, including the one last week in his nomination acceptance speech. He even had the cynical gall to state he agreed with the Court decision in the Heller case after his campaign had told the Chicago Tribune last November that ‘Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional.’

When ABC’s local Washington, D.C. affiliate asked Obama: ‘One other issue that’s of great importance here in the district as well is gun control…but you support the D.C. handgun ban?’ Obama: ‘Right.’ When ABC’s Leon Harris continued with, ‘and you’ve said that it’s constitutional,’ Obama said, ‘right.’

Snyder recalled also that an Illinois candidate questionnaire revealed Obama supported a general state handgun ban in 1996. He later flatly denied the handgun ban statement and blamed it on a state senate campaign staffer for incorrectly filling out the questionnaire. However, the publication Politico located a copy of the filled-out questionnaire. Obama’s own notes in his own handwriting showed that he personally checked answers and corrected them.

Obama is a shifty character and his election to the highest office in the land would be a tragedy for America’s 80 million law-abiding gun owners and also for the entire country, noted Snyder. Some people in political life may try to square the circle, to claim they support both gun rights and Obama, but you can’t have it both ways. You cannot serve both freedom and Obama! You cannot honor both truth and Barack!

Obama has supported a ban on the sale of all semiautomatic firearms. He and Biden support reinstatement of the Clinton Administration era’s ban on the sale and importation of certain semiautomatic firearms, a ban that was allowed to sunset 10 years after it took effect because of its failure as a crime control measure. Biden voted three years ago against a measure to prohibit harassing third party civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers or importers of firearms or ammunition. By contrast, McCain voted for the measure and it became law, known as the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

Snyder pointed out that a gun rights plank in the draft Republican Party 2008 Platform to be voted on by GOP national convention delegates this week underscores the significance of the right to keep and bear arms for the party’s national ticket. We uphold the right of individual Americans to own firearms, it reads, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly affirmed by the Second Amendment. We applaud federal court rulings affirming the right, particularly the Supreme Court’s Heller decision, and we assert the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. We call on the next president to appoint judges who will similarly respect the Constitution.

Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend their homes and communities against violent individuals and the drug culture. We call for education in constitutional rights in schools, and we support the option of firearms training in federal programs serving senior citizens and women. We urge immediate action to review the automatic denial of gun ownership to returning members of the Armed Forces who have suffered trauma during service to their country. We condemn frivolous lawsuits against firearms manufacturers, which are transparent attempts to deprive citizens of their rights. We oppose federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national gun registration as violations of the Second Amendment.
