Yet more Zero Tolerance Idiocy

Say Uncle & Bruce reported yet another example of Zero Tolerance Policy idiocy. A child was suspended for 3 days because he was writing with a pen that had a Glock logo on it in Georgia. Yes that is right - suspended for having the name Glock written on a pen. What exactly does that school administrator have against a perfectly nice Austrian family name? The boy was suspended for 3 days on Friday Jan 18th, 2008 (I took the liberty of correcting a few spelling errors):

. . . So, my phone rings Friday afternoon. It's the vice principal from my son's school saying that he needs to discuss a serious situation about my son. When I asked him what was going on, he tells me that a pen bearing a Glock logo is forbidden by school policy and that I need to come and pick up my son because there is a mandatory 3 day suspension because of the violation. Apparently, one of my son's teachers saw him writing with the pen during an assignment.

While I have the VP on the telephone, I retrieve my son's student handbook. Flipping though it, I see that weapons, replica weapons, pictures of weapons, and weapon images on keychains or other items are forbidden. The pen I had given him was one I picked up at a law enforcement firearms competition last year - which bore only the Glock logo, but not an image or rendition of a firearm. Nowhere does it say that a firearm company logo is restricted by school policy. I explain this to the VP.

So, the VP gets his handbook and looks through it. He was in agreement that the pen did not directly violate the policy, but that the Glock name was commonly known to be a firearm and therefore it technically was in violation . . .
After the boy, his father, and their attorney met with the Superintendent on Tuesday Jan 22nd, the suspension was overturned:
Well, the verdict is in...

I arrived at the superintendent's office at about 8:45am. He was already in his office and readily met with my Uncle Bill (my attorney), my son, and myself. He seemed to be rather nice and agreed that the suspension was uncalled for because the pen was not a physical or graphic representation of a weapon. He admitted that it was a bad judgment call on the VPs part which should have been thought over a little more; especially since my son does not have a disciplinary record. He apologized for the problem and told us that my son could return to school and that the disciplinary would be removed.

I took my son to school and met with the VP. This guy is about 30 years old and looks like a poster child for gay bathhouses. He did apologize lightly, but did not seem overly happy about it. Apparently the superintendent called him about 5am this morning and told him to 'make it right'. Our meeting very short. The VP ran off and left us with a receptionist. She apologized; returned the pen and gave us the disciplinary that removed from his record. I made sure by looking in his record folder while in the office that it was gone. I have all three copies of it now (white, yellow, and pink) - so there is not another copy of it in existence.

I returned the Glock pen to my son to use until it dies. At which point the pen becomes inoperable, I will be giving him another Glock pen. As far as I am concerned, he can use Glock pens forever . . .

As many have said, Zero Tolerance=Zero Thought

Update: Some have asked where to get their own glock pen that they can send to school with their children. This is actually a better pen than the promotional pen that they give away at events, I plan to order one myself.

  4. The question is: Why would you want the suspension overturned?

It's like rubbing your pinky finger up against the burner of the stove, and thinking to yourself "Well, I didn't burn nearly enough of my hand that time. Let me try again!"

  6. Funny thing, when I was in High School, during the early '70's, in a small southern KY town, many kids brought their .22's, shotguns, and an occasional rifle to school. We were a rural county school and many of us couldn't wait for the bell to ring, so we could go hunting on the way home. There was never an incident where a firearm was used to shoot or threaten anyone in any manner. We would even swap guns out in the parking lot. Obviously kids today would create a war zone if allowed to "legally" bring firearms to school. Apparently, parentage is as much to blame, as over zealous jack-asses such as your sons VP. It's insanity (you sons situation) run amok, for shure, but our rotting society, loss of a morals, and "X-box" upringing of our children is as much to blame as your son's idiot VP.

  7. Jim: just for clarification it wasn't my son, I was just linked to the story because it made me mad.

It is interesting to note that we didn't have any school shootings until after some liberal decided to create gun free zones in our schools. Gun free zones are the problem, not the solution (as if any criminal or crazy person would obey such a stupid sign in the first place). An armed society is a polite society - anyone who decides to initiate a mass shooting where the right to bear arms is not infringed would likely run into one or more armed citizens willing & able to place a quick stop to the situation.

It is high time we ended this experiment in gun free zones that uses our children as the mice. I think enough of them have died to prove that the experiment is a dismal failure.

  8. First hand account from a user on AR15.com about his son. At this point he wishes to remain anonymous & does not want to go to the media. This is the thread where he told the story:

  9. As a former US Army Infantry Captain and a former LEO myself, now serving my 18th years teaching deep in the inner city at a public high school, I'm well aware of this idiotic mentality. All of my peers (fellow teachers) and the administration are UBER liberals and very antigun. However I was specifically recruited from another school to come and create a psychology program and to teach AP American Government. They KNEW right up front about my politics (conservative) and my recreational past times: IDPA competitor and NRA Instructor (also for 20 years) and that I had gathered a social studies Teacher of the Year award so they didn't care.

Mostly I teach my kids HOW to think and not (as the system does) WHAT to think. I'm all about Subjects, Issues and AGENDAS. Everything is a "subject" when you discuss ALL sides of a Subject you create an ISSUE that can be handled fair and balanced, with the kids making up their own minds and not allowing anybody -- not teacher, parent, clergy or peers do this FOR them. But when you discuss only ONE side of a subject you have an AGENDA. A blatant manipulation of a young mind. The purpose is usually a VOTE somewhere down the line.

I always start out the school year every year with this statement then I show them how they've ALL been manipulated over the last 12 years (I teach seniors). I always ask them the following
#1 "How many of you, by a show of hands has ever had any teacher or administrator or counselor say ANYTHING positive about gun ownership? Nobody, right?" (No hands are up) Yet the gun industry is a strong source of employment for working Americans. It's both an amateur sport for which there are OLYMPIC events and a professional sport which supports a lot of livlihoods as well.

#2 More evidence: By a show of hands, how many of you in the last 12 years have ever heard a teacher administrator or counselor say anything BAD about the United Nations? Nobody, right? No hands are up. But in this county our middle schools celebrate UN day and dress up as citizens of other nations, and decorate classroom doors for UN countries. Yet a vast majority of these same countries actually despise us and constantly work to undermine and harm our great nation. Your answers (or lack thereof) are proof positive that you've been victimized by agendas. But now, in this class, we're going to discuss how we're going to avoid this problem this year....

Then they control all the schools and universities. The parent in this case did the correct thing,STAND YOUR GROUND AND FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS, or don't cry when they're gone! GFW"

I object to sending a Christian child into an antichristian atheistic government school as a missionary to adult authorities (who are being paid to persecute Christianity as a means of eliminating it). Likewise, using a child as a proxy to fight the propaganda-meisters and the PC-trolls in government (liberal left-wing) schools constitutes child-endangerment.

Far better to fight in the adult arena for school vouchers, school choice, homeschooling protections, and even (gasp!) defunding the government schools to the extent that students flee from the anti-Christian indoctrination. If ten, twenty, or thirty percent of the students in a district flee for their Christian lives from schools that proselytize for atheism, then the taxing authority must cancel ten, twenty, or thirty percent of the individual taxpayer's bill for schools.

I agree with perlhaqr: why would anyone WANT to continue sending his or her child into a classroom environment that is hostile to the child's family values? That just tells the school, "We don't think you have abused our child enough, mentally, morally, and spiritually. So we are returning him or her to you to see if your attitude has changed toward Christian and/or conservative children."

You abuse my child once, shame on you.
You abuse my child twice . . . let's not even consider the possibility of such blatant stupidity on my part.
