Jack - bullet diameter isn't actually the entire picture. You need to look at total bullet weight, total force, length of barrel, etc. The primary indicator would be ft/lbf (Foot Lbs of Force) Here is a comparison between the AK-47, AR-15, & the .30-06 to give an idea - as you can see the .30-06 is the most powerful of the 3, and there are other rifles even more powerful than the .30-06:
AK-47:
7.9 mm (.311 in) 123 gr 2,300 ft/s & 1,480 ft/lbf
AR-15:
5.69 mm (.224 in) 62 gr 3,100 ft/s & 1,309 ft/lbf
.30-06:
7.8 mm (.308 in) 180 gr 2,880 ft/s & 3,315 ft/lbf

There are far more powerful rifles out there than the semi-automatic rifles that had been banned by the Clinton Gun ban. A .30-06 rifle comes to mind as a popular hunting rifle that is far more powerful than either the popular semi-auto AR-15 or the popular semi-auto version of the AK-47. Yet the article continued to blubber on & on about "high powered assault weapons

I wish NRA and GOA would work to effect boycotts of both CBS and CNN programming. The way to hurt these networks doing anti-gun pieces is to hit them right in the wallet.
